Menopause & Diabetes

Ladies … We just don’t get a break, do we, with our bodies!!

When was the last time you had your hormone levels checked? Did you know that for us older ladies, the hormones estrogen and progesterone affect how your cells respond to insulin? After menopause, changes in your hormone levels can trigger fluctuations in your blood sugar level. You may notice that your blood sugar level changes more than before, and goes up and down.

Speak to your doctor at your next check-up, to please check those hormonal levels.

Supplements are key for your health when you reach the age of menopause. I know that Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Vit D and Magnesium are crucial for better health. Vit D is essential for your immune system, and Omega 3 has so many functions, but it is an anti-inflammatory which is very important for diabetics. It also helps with blood circulation, eye health, brain health, prostate health, breast cancer, and lots more. Just make sure that you get whole food supplements and not synthetic supplements.

Cruciferous vegetables and non-GMO soy contain important nutrients that help for hormones. The essential fatty acids found in whole grains are important for these hormones too. Make sure that you understand how your body processes grains because most diabetics must avoid grains. There is a product on the market called NeoLife Tre-en-en or Formula IV. These contain essential fatty acids. I am not aware of other products from other companies that contain all these essential fatty acids. Omega 3 and Wheatgerm are also important.

Chemicals in your home can also play an important role in being endocrine disruptors. They interfere with hormone function. Plastic containers, cleaning products, personal care products and soaps are full of these endocrine disruptors. Start using non-toxic, organic cleaning and personal products. Many of these are cheaper than the things we usually buy.

Ask your doctor to check your hormone levels at your next check up, and meet with someone who can guide you on the best supplements to take.
