GODFREY

  His story:
I am an advocate for the fact that living with diabetes is not a prison sentence.
My world fell apart in 2009 when I was diagnosed with the disease.  My HbA1c was 7.4%.  I weighed 94kg and felt awful.   I was immediately prescribed Metformin 500g 3 times a day, and Glycomin twice a day.   But looking back now, I realise that it’s not how you feel at that point that counts, but the decision you make to take your life forward. Back in the pre-diabetes knowing days, I ate a lot of starch and processed foods. That all changed on 1 June 2020 when I joined Linda’s WhatsApp Group called‘Diabetic Warriors’ which allowed me to be in a comfort zone with others who were in the same health position as me.  Linda explained the dangers of processed, refined and simple carbohydrates, and how the affect blood sugars.  She guided us continuously to eat a Banting or Keto lifestyle, and which foods to complete cut out from our diet. Now I am totally off the starch, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes.  Instead I am on bacon and egg for breakfast and vegetables for lunch and supper, and I was introduced to intermittent fasting.  This new lifestyle has become my life. Since the beginning of June, changing my lifestyle, I have lost 9.5kg and after one month of intermittent fasting my estimated HbA1c was 6.3%. Three of my family members are also diabetic, and since being witness to my changes, they are keen on following my lifestyle.  The learning point is that T2 Diabetes can be reversed! What you put in your mouth is a decision that you make so you can take control of your life by changing your dietary lifestyle. I exited diabetes medication in July 2020 and am feeling like I am a part of a whole new world.
